Gandhiji

Gandhi is known in India and around the
world as Mahatma [Note 1] [2] (Great Soul) and Bapu (Father).  The Government of India has declared him the Father of the Nation of India in his honor. [3] [4] [5] [6]  His birthday on 2nd October is celebrated with due dignity in India as Gandhi Jayanti.  October 2, 2006 was declared the International Day of Non-Violence by the United Nations General Assembly on June 15, 2006.  All member states of the United Nations agree to observe the day. [6]

As an educated British lawyer, Gandhi was the first to apply the ideology of his non-violent peaceful civil movement to the rights of the oppressed Indian community in South Africa.  On his return to India, he, along with a few distressed peasants and day laborers, formed a movement against discriminatory taxation and widespread discrimination.  After coming to power under the leadership of the Indian National Congress, Gandhi started campaigning all over India on various issues including poverty alleviation, women's emancipation, establishment of brotherhood among different ethnic groups, eradication of apartheid, and economic prosperity of the nation.  But all this was aimed at liberating Swaraj i.e. India from foreign rule.  In 1930, Gandhi led the 400-kilometer (246-mile) Dundee Salt Parade in protest of the Indian salt tax, which in 1942 triggered a direct India-free movement against the British rulers.  He was imprisoned several times in South Africa and India for various reasons at different times.

Mahatma Gandhi has remained steadfast in non-violent doctrine and truth in all circumstances.  He lived a simple life and established an autonomous monastery.  His own cloth was the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, which he himself spun on a spinning wheel.  He ate ordinary vegetarian food.  In his last life he used to eat more fruits.  He fasted for a long time for self-purification and protest.
